Strategy Topic of The Week #2
06/18/2008
Continuing in the direction of improving our poker skills we have started week #2 of the STOTW (strategy topic of the week).

The Mid-High Stakes NLHE forum's topic for this week is on balancing your range - should you do it? If so, when? He's a small piece of the discussion:

By perfectly balancing your range and bet sizing to include an equal number of bluffs and value bets you can make your game unexploitable, which is great, but a lot of the time your EV may be higher by identifying holes in your opponents game and working out how to best exploit them. The times when you should try to balance your range perfectly are when you're playing against someone equal to or better than you and you think that if you tried to exploit their game, doing so would open up holes in your own game that they could take an even larger advantage of. The Small Stakes NLHE forum's topic for this week is on value betting. When should we make those thin bets on the river? What about betting the turn?

A lot of the time people will check behind on the river with a medium strength hand (ie top pair weak kicker) because they think "noone should ever call with worse here" but the fact is that people love to make hero calls and a lot of the time you're missing out on value by not betting the river. While your opponents "shouldn't" call, they occasionally will (and be making a mistake by doing so). If we don't bet the river we don't give them the opportunity to make that mistake.

Most of the players at micro/low stakes are generally more passive than at higher stakes and that means they will check-call with a lot of their weaker hands rather than raising or folding like a better player would do.

So this thread is for people to post HHs and start discussions about spots to value bet. (Read more...)

We have also introduced this segment for Pot-Limit Omaha discussions too. This week we're focusing on playing against shortstacked opponents and how to best deal with them.

My definition of a shortstack is a player with 40bb or less. They can often be very annoying and cause you to get out of your game. However, these are not players that should cause you problems in the long term if you know how to deal with them.

There are 3 types of shortstackers I’ve come across: The Maniac, The Nit, and The Calling Station. Strategies against these players will depend on which category they fall under. (Read more...)

Again, if you have any suggestions for topics that you'd like to see discussed please contact us and we will involve them in the upcoming weeks.
